The process engineering firm based in North Shields isn’t new to the sector, having worked with the Royal Air Force (RAF) on a ground-breaking research project that explored the sustainable treatment of waste jet fuel.
Backed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) through the Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA), the NERDSC is designed to foster collaboration, accelerate innovation, and help businesses bring new ideas to market through practical support and commercialisation.
Speaking about joining the cluster, Simon Taylor, Director of Northern Engineering Solutions, said: “With a proven track record in the advanced manufacturing and chemical industries, Northern Engineering Solutions is perfectly positioned to support the UK’s defence and security ecosystem. Our recent project with the RAF demonstrated our capabilities in designing and scaling process innovation that aligned with priorities around sustainability and net zero.
“We are looking forward to connecting with other members over the coming months and exploring new commercial opportunities.”
The firm's collaboration with the RAF resulted in a biological treatment system that used naturally occurring microorganisms to break down unused and waste hydrocarbons from jet fuel. Carbon dioxide generated by the process was also captured in a solid form and recycled, rather than it being released into the atmosphere. The initial phase was funded by DASA, with later investment coming from the RAF Innovation Fund.
Northern Engineering Solutions specialises in mechanical, electrical and process engineering (MEP) solutions, with expertise in 3D process engineering design, high- and ultra-high-purity process pipework, cleanrooms, and effluent treatment systems. Clients include Pragmatic, CPI, Sterling Pharma, and De La Rue.
